“Terakki Mektebi” is a nostalgic song inspired by the historic Mekteb-i Terakki, founded in Ottoman Salonika in the late 19th century as a progressive school devoted to modern education, science, commerce, foreign languages, and the education of both girls and boys.
Rather than treating the past as something only mournful, this song imagines the school as it might have felt around 1900: sea wind from the harbor, French lessons in the classroom, Turkish voices in the corridor, maps opening on the wall, chalk dust in the air, and children walking toward a wider future.
