The Afterthought Thumb
This video is about knitting The Afterthought Thumb. This type of thumb has no gusset and is seen in many types of traditional mittens such as Latvian mittens and Saami mittens (such as the one used for demonstrating in the video). I begin by showing how to put the waste yarn in, to create a hole later. Then after completing the mitten, I come back to the waste yarn for the thumb. I remove the waste yarn, and live sts appear all the way around the hole. Pick up the sts, perhaps adding more to the corners to fill the gaps, and then complete the thumb to the tip. Decreases at the thumb base can be worked if there are too many sts to fit well, or if you are knitting a motif, and want the repeat to end well. The pattern for the beautiful Skolt Saami Mitten can be found in the booklet "Discover the Wonderful World of Sami Knitting" by Laura Ricketts, available here: https://shop.longthreadmedia.com/products/discover-the-wonderful-world-of-sami-knitting-by-laura-ricketts This technique is also applicable to the "Afterthought Heel", except that the waste yarn is used on half the sts of the sock.
