The Apple
I’ve been looking long and deep Into the eyes of all the weak Is it anger, is it sadness, is it sin? Somewhere in between the psalms We made the bullets and the bombs And we triggered the beginning of the end Friendless grifters picking pockets Endless litters of false prophets Lifting nickels from the eyelids of the dead Lo the ferryman did cry A bolt of lightning split the sky Twas the lord who interrupted and he said I told you bout the apple tree And brothers and their rivalry And how to be his keeper not his foe You know that blessed is the lamb Behold the wickedness of man Oh I have tried to understand him but I don’t Be it water be it blood When I send my second flood Do you really think you’re getting on that boat? There are bearers of false witness Profiteers of mental sickness And we’d do it all again that if we could Speak of devils that you know and then Of devils that you don’t And then profess the lesser evil is still good Countless children ask their mothers Why we never loved each other They all stutter for they know not what to say We were handed every answer For the cure to end this cancer But we went and chose the sickness anyway I told you bout the apple tree And brothers and their rivalry And how to be his keeper not his foe You know that blessed is the lamb Behold the wickedness of man Oh I have tried to understand him but I don’t Be it water be it blood When I send my second flood Do you really think you’re getting on that boat? Now the heirs of our undoing Stare upon this modern ruin A colossus toppled brought brought down his knees Do you still not understand It is less hard to fool a man Than help him comprehend that he has been deceived Now the ferryman stops rowing There's no coming and no going Just the water and the silence and the wait And the lord who spoke so plainly Watches quietly, and maybe Even he has learned to grieve a little late I told you bout the apple tree And brothers and their rivalry And how to be his keeper not his foe You know that blessed is the lamb Behold the wickedness of man Oh I have tried to understand him but I don’t I spoke of envy and idolatry And still you send your cavalry With fealty wherever you smell gold You know that blessed is the Lamb But now the wickedness of man Oh I have tried to understand him but I don’t
