The AustroFascist State Edit

The AustroFascist state was the creation of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuß, an ex-soldier and agrarian minister of the Austrian Federal Republic. Through the merger of the monarchist Heimwehr, the Christian social party and the Landbund, the Fatherland Front was formed, which claimed to represent all Austrians. The state was based on the Papal encyclical Quadragesimo Anno, issued by Pope Pius XI in 1931. The encyclical promoted a corporate state structure — organizing society into guild-like associations based on profession and social function, criticising both socialism and unregulated capitalism, advocating a third way rooted in Christian ethics. Following the rise of Austrian N@zis in the Innsbruck elections in 1934, all elections were outlawed. And after a brief but violent civil war with the left wing Republikanischer Schutzbund, a one party state was declared. Dollfuß would not rule for long, as he was assassinated by SA funded Austrian N@zi terrorists. His successor would be the monarchist Kurt Schuschnigg, yet he could do little to stop his country’s absorption into the N@zi empire.
