The B.A.D.I.C. System

This video is the introduction to the B.A.D.I.C. system, a list of the five major systems of critique I will be using to review and rate media going forward. After (not-so) extensive testing, lab scientists have determined that the five measurements below are what determine the quality of a narrative. Believability: How well can you trust the story to keep the promises it makes. If everyone believes that being late to the wedding will result in Dr. Evil dipping the bride in a vat of acid, and we have no reason to doubt that is not the truth, the story should have that happen. Appeal: Appeal is the opposite of disruption. Any elements that make a show easier to enjoy will gain points in this category. Because what makes a show appealing often varies from person to person, this is the most subjective category. However, I will try to be as generous as possible with scores in this field, as I think (almost) every story has something appealing about it. Disruption: Disruption is any factor that makes the story harder to watch/read/listen to. Examples include poor acting and/or distracting noises. Perhaps everything else about the show is good, but you hardly ever see it (because of poor camera work). Everyone starts out with full marks and, as it becomes harder to watch, loses points over time. Imitation Score: The imitation score is meant to keep score more in line with reality. In reality, when we watch, listen to, or read a story, even a good one, we judge it based on its weakest moments. If a story has little appeal or consistency, it isn’t going to be good even if the other elements are amazing. Consistency: How often the story makes plot points and focuses on them. If, in one point of the story, we are focusing on how to stop Dr. Evil from dipping our soon to be bride in a vat of acid, then the story, without good reason, shifts into how the main character has to sell meth to afford his cancer treatments, that is bad.
