The amount of carbon dioxide that is in the atmosphere affects global climate. Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere when it dissolved in the surface ocean, but can return to the atmosphere if it remains in the surface. The biological pump is one process that leads to long term carbon storage in the deep ocean.
