The City

THE CITY DURATION: 19 min LEVEL: K-3 The City is one in a series of videos designed to stimulate language and enhance social studies in pre-primary to Year 3 classes. The City covers a range of activities that may be experienced in a typical day and evening in a large city. The on-camera presenter, Tina, introduces viewers to the programme and provides brief narration, relying mainly on naturally occurring sounds. This allows greater flexibility in the use of the sequences presented. Other, unnamed characters are used as links throughout the day. Through Tina and five city workers we are able to look at transport, communications, services, exchange of money, work and work settings. SOCIAL STUDIES: Yr 1 People's Needs and Wants. Yr 2 Living in the Community. Yr 3 Economic Dependence Communication and Change Community Rules. Comparisons may be made with the children's local environment, e.g. more/less people; larger/smaller shops; busier; noisier/quieter. LANGUAGE: The wealth of visual stimuli will generate spontaneous verbal responses, particularly for those children who have had similar experiences. These experiences could be expressed in oral, written or art forms. Imagination may be stimulated to create fictitious situations around characters and locations shown. Teachers may find it useful to use the 'pause" control on the V.C.R. when showing the video to allow for discussion or further explanation. They may wish to replay the programme on later occasions to take full advantage of the concepts presented. 1986.
