[Intro - spoken, slow, observational, low energy] Its The Midwest’s Middle Class Mecca One heck of a parking situation As we trade spiritual warfare for our War on inflation To Costco We Go Our Weekly Devotional Got greeters and everything Everything We need to satisfy our souls [slight pause] But I don’t know why Buying in Bulk Doesn’t seem to be filling me up [Verse 1 - spoken, steady rhythm, dry tone, slightly satirical] Bright lights inside, everything clean No products for a dirty heart But a flat screen and life sized gum-ball machine A good place to start I became a member without taking a class Costco helped me remodel my whole bathroom I’m saving on gas [slight pace increase] Aisles leading to the alter Sacrificing a rotisserie chicken And two bags of dove chocolate Don’t forget the guilt offering Slaughtering a whole cake With our own name on it [Verse 2 - rhythmic spoken, more energy, ironic tone building] Cart getting full but we need new clothes Who needs a ring and a robe when The Co has a whole new seasonal wardrobe Speaking of seasons Tis the reason I’m here [slight slowdown] To satisfy this hole in my heart With a shopping cart full of… [long pause] Oh I need to hit the pharmacy Keep my body in harmony Supplement my faith with Breakfast shakes No plan B for me Well they do have it, in mass Quantities I guess we’ll throw it in Its not a sin if your church is Costco [Verse 3 - spoken, more intensity, tension rising, less humor] Filling up Faith a la carte Cart stuffed to the brim Services on Sunday Jam packed Indulgences now sold as samples [slightly slower, more serious] And that’s what we do Just a sample, just a taste Embracing the persecution of the cardboard cuts On my hands and the cart with the squeaky wheel But look, they got a deal on tires [brief ironic lift, then drop back] I dont know if I’ll ever get tired of going to Costco Everyone’s here And Everyone’s equal [slight pause] Except those on the outside the non members Non believers [lower tone, more weight] But how is that any different To the last church I went To the check out [Bridge - spoken, slower, more serious, prophetic shift] Costco’s a cathedral Threading the needle between Toledo and upward mobility That’s what it preaches Teaching more to our sons and daughters Than maybe it ought to [pause] But [drop volume, weight increases] He is still king Can still bring A spring clearance to this temple Its time to repent y’all Toledo [strong emphasis] Time to trade in the warehouse for His house Honestly Corporate loyalty For corporate worship Summer dresses for confession and light fixtures for scripture Set down the party trays and start to pray Return to His house For a house party [Final Verse - very slow, heavy, reflective, minimal energy] We get our bread and our wine from Costco And think that’s just fine with us Because Cheap grace at a discount Still amounts to a full cart at check out [long pause] But it dont It won’t fill the hole Not the whole way You can’t buy his love It was already purchased No returns A gift [slow increase in clarity, not volume] Get out of Costco And go to church So he can send you back in With the Spirit and truth Healing shoppers and patrons Making a straight run at revival [slight lift, hopeful tone begins] In the aisles Of a grocery store Toledo That is the more he has in store For you [final pause] For you Toledo
