The Dark Web Kingpin
The Dark Web Kingpin | The Silk Road Story On October 1st, 2013, a young man sat at a window seat in a San Francisco public library, signed in to a chat window. He didn't know that the federal agents who had been hunting him for two years were about to walk through the door. He also didn't know that two of those agents had spent the last year secretly stealing from him. This is the story of Silk Road — the first dark web drug marketplace, the multi-agency federal task force assembled to dismantle it, and the two men with badges who became, by the marketplace's own metrics, two of its most successful predators. Marco Polo was the codename. Baltimore was the office. And by the time Ross Ulbricht was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in a Manhattan courtroom, the task force that brought him in had already collapsed under the weight of its own corruption. This documentary draws on the federal indictments filed in Maryland and California in 2015, the trial transcripts from the Southern District of New York, Joshua Bearman's two-part Wired investigation, Andy Greenberg's reporting at Wired and Ars Technica, and Nick Bilton's book "American Kingpin." Some details — including the exact way investigators located the Silk Road server — were redacted at the government's request and have never been fully clarified. — CHAPTERS — 00:00 The Library 00:55 Sources 01:25 How the Marketplace Worked 02:30 The Marco Polo Task Force 02:55 Carl Force IV — The Persona Sprawl 04:00 Shaun Bridges — The Admin Theft 05:00 The Staged Murder 05:45 The New York Team Closes In 07:00 The Library Arrest 07:45 Trial and Life Sentence 08:30 The Hunters Become the Hunted 09:15 The Pardon 09:40 The Pirate Is Not a Person — SOURCES & FURTHER READING — - Nick Bilton — American Kingpin (Portfolio, 2017) - Joshua Bearman — "The Untold Story of Silk Road" (Wired, 2015) - Andy Greenberg — extensive Silk Road reporting (Wired, 2013–2025) - U.S. v.
