The Exile's Jig
This one was played at the session the other night, and I was glad to be reminded of it. To my ear it belongs to the family of jigs that includes the hop jig 'Cucanandy', 'Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part' and 'My Mind Will Never Be Easy'. All great tunes. One online source suggests that it was composed by our friend and song-hero Johnny Moynihan, and that would make sense as his old band Sweeney's Men recorded it, and the track can be enjoyed here: https://youtu.be/i2GQWNY3YLY?si=cJKDPfVKGR0j_MPB Knowing Johnny he wouldn't admit to composing it. He would approach that distinction with the same enthusiasm he has for his being considered the person who 'introduced the bouzouki to Irish music' by the folk loredy lordies themselves. He always said he prefered hearing tunes played unaccompanied anyway. 😂 👌 👌
