The Fabulous "Flying Z" lives! Virtually at least... Back in the day... being the serious college student that I was, I found myself constantly doodling in my classes. Come to think of it I doodled in my high school classes as well...hum? I'm noticing a pattern here. Anyway, it was my way of "taking notes"...sure that's what it was, taking notes...sure. (He said in his best John Lovitz impersonation ) I still have my notebooks filled with amazing works of "art" and "invention". I'm sure Leonardo da Vinci would have been envious. I just knew that one day those doodles would be attributed to a major artistic talent... or a certifiable lunatic. The jury is still out on that point. One doodle I always loved was my idea for an electric guitar called "The Flying Z". Now Gibson had a "Flying V" so I always felt a "Flying Z' would be the next natural step. Never mind that it would be the most impractical and uncomfortable guitar ever designed. It would at least be very cool looking and that's all that really mattered to a wannabe musician like myself... isn't it? A few days ago while going through my old "notebooks" I found my original sketch and plans. Now don't think for one moment that this contraption couldn't be a reality. It just so happened back around '74 a friend of mine from college, Jim Buckner, actually built a "somewhat" working prototype. I think he found a 2"x12" piece of lumber and started from there. As I remember it only had 3 strings but it was pretty much the basic idea. I really wish there was a picture of it but alas none can be found. I'm sure it's hanging in a museum somewhere right now. As for "play-ability" all I can say is, it was a non-starter especially since the placement of the pickup-selector-switch would tend to puncture one's right arm and give you a sever case of "tennis elbow" instantly. As I began to think, always questionable in my case, I wondered wouldn't it be fun to see a younger me playing my strange but ahead of it's time concept guitar. So.....what would Ai do with this brilliant idea? Simple, just give it a few prompts and some images of the guitar design and myself in my younger days...with hair! What could possibly go wrong? Well Ai came "close" I guess. I case you haven't noticed Ai does some really STRANGE things! If ya watch closely, it added some strange modifications to the guitar and to myself..check out those biceps!!! Oh well this is as close as I'll ever get to seeing the "Flying Z" in action. Once again I took an old tune of mine and told SUNO to do a funky version of it and voila I had my music track. I threw a few of the Ai generated video clips on the timeline and out this popped the world's first promotional video for the "Fabulous Flying Z"...
