I don’t think it’s outright terrible but there are many questionable writing decisions that by itself deserve its own video breaking down. But today I’m going to be talking about one of if not my personal biggest issue with the season, and that’s… Homelander. I hate to be the “oh remember Homelander in season 1” but… REMEMBER HOMELANDER IN SEASON 1? This guy was portrayed to be not only the highest pillar of power within the verse, but also had been stated to be stronger than anything and anyone on the planet. Earth has quite literally tested every weapon on earth, which would not only just include things like military weaponry, but should also be factoring in things like chemicals or toxins that could potentially infect or even knock Homelander out, allowing him to be susceptible to pain. Taking this statement at face value is what you in fact should do as within the context of this scene, the whole point is to show how Billy can’t have any hope in defeating bro. Homelander even manages to move so fast, he saves both himself and Billy before the explosion even goes off. We also see in Season 1 he’s casually breaking the sound barrier flying, which was something not even A Train was capable of with Compound V in his blood stream. I’m emphasizing all this old information to you because Homelander coming out of Season 1 was an unstoppable force that no one could defeat alone. Even when we created methods to get around him, like with Soldier Boy and Temp V, Homelander still can’t be defeated alone. But even with this, I do believe Season 3 was the start of the great Homelander nerf. I’m fine with Soldier Boy being almost as strong as him, and Billy himself was someone ultimately weaker than the 2, so him being more so of a wild card to throw Homelander off like in Herogasm was a smart choice. I think my first big problem with Homelander comes with Maeve. You see Maeve within season 1 was already clearly a weaker fighter than Homelander, and with Season 2 introducing Stormfront, Maeve seemed to be left a bit in the shadow and clearly someone who’s closer with the likes of Starlight or Kimiko. This by itself would have to mean Season 5 A Train would just be faster than any version of A Train even including the one cracked out on Compound V, as A Train was never established to be as fast at his top speed. I think it’s fine for A Train to be faster but I think it should be kinda like how The Flash is faster than Superman but the gap isn’t really that overwhelming. I just mentioned Annie here since I’m on the topic of season 5 and this is an example of something that could’ve been useful against Homelander but just ultimately wasn’t. Another example of this is Ryan who from the beginning was set up to be the one to fight Homelander since he had the potential to be even stronger than him. And what’s so ironic about all of this is the best established Homelander counters have either amounted to nothing or have actually done nothing. And yet this season goes out of its way to show that there are in fact weaknesses Homelander has, like Uranium. Or more specifically I guess the radiation that it produces but yeah this actually can affect Homelander and pretty much anyone with or without powers. Now I will say Frenchie did apply this to Homelander in the new episode, and Homelander ultimately did overcome this so i cant be too mean here. But im just thinking its weird Billy Butcher couldn’t have possibly figured out about a weakness all supes have? Or even try to look into working with people who might also hate Homelander, like Malchemical from Mr Marathons group. if this group was written into like season 2 or 3, the way of beating homelander is basically right there. Have Malchemical breathe on Homelander, Homelander gets knocked out, then Ryan at full power or Even Soldier Boy Billy and Maeve would’ve been more than enough. I mean hell even after the Malchemical scene it got me thinking… What if Mindstorm was somehow able to be used against Homelander, would that work? You’d assume Vought would've tested Homelanders absolute limits and know exactly what he is or isn't capable of but, here we are with someone who was in fact at herogasm just able to do this. It definitely seems like to me the writers aren't really keeping track with what Homelanders' limits are, and this results in ways for the boys to basically approach Homelander but don't.
