"The Iliad" is an epic poem by the ancient Greek poet Homer, which relates some of the important events of the final weeks of the Trojan War and of the Greek siege of the city of Troy (also known in ancient times as Ilion, Ilios or Ilium). Published in the mid-8th century BCE, "The Iliad" is generally considered to be the earliest work of Western literary history as a whole, and one of the best known and loved stories ever.
In its portrayal of the epic subject of the Trojan War, the stirring scenes of a bloody war, the wrath of Achilles and the relentless actions of the gods, it examines themes of glory, vengeance, homecoming and destiny, and has provided subjects and stories for many other later Greek , Roman and Renaissance writings.
