UNIT 7: Global Conflict, 1900–PRESENT The Interwar Period The two decades between the armistice of 1918 and the outbreak of war in 1939 are sometimes called an interwar period, as though peace were the default and the wars were the exceptions. But these years were never truly peaceful: economic catastrophe, political revolution, and the rise of authoritarian states made the 1920s and 1930s a period of relentless crisis. Three developments above all determined what came next: the fragility of liberal democracy in the face of economic collapse, the rise of fascism in Europe, and the consolidation of single-party rule under Stalin in the Soviet Union. Key topics covered: - The Great Depression - key structural features - The Road to War - Checkpoint Part of the "AP World History" series.
