The Last Soviet City

Five months after the worst nuclear disaster in human history, the Soviet Union faced an impossible problem: 30,000 people had just lost their home. Pripyat was uninhabitable. A replacement city had to be built from scratch, faster than any city had ever been built before. The result was Slavutych — constructed in under 18 months by workers from 8 Soviet republics, each building their own district in their own architectural style. Armenian stone, Baltic minimalism, Caucasian ornament, all inside a radioactive forest 50 kilometers from the Chornobyl exclusion zone. This is the story of Slavutych - the city born of Chornobyl disaste.
