The Mara - Latte

Mara (also known as Zmora or Nocnica) is one of the most psychologically terrifying demons in Slavic mythology. Unlike monsters that hide in forests, she invades your most intimate space: your own bed. Unlike many spirits, a Mara wasn't always a dead soul. It was often believed to be the soul of a living woman that left her body at night. Folklore says she could be the seventh daughter in a family or someone whose name was whispered incorrectly during baptism. While her physical body slept, her soul wandered to haunt others. Her main goal was to "ride" her victims. She would sit on a person’s chest, slowly pressing the breath out of them and drinking their life force. This is the origin of the word "nightmare" (night + mare). The Mara didn't just target humans. Farmers would often find their horses exhausted and sweating in the morning, with their manes tangled into "elf-locks" (knots that couldn't be untangled).
