The Matuka fly is a streamer that is created almost entirely with hackle feathers. It boasts a large side profile, while still being extremely lightweight. Comprised of only 2 feathers, and of course some thread and wire, this will cast like a dream, yet look like a large baitfish swimming in the water. With a little digging on the internet I found it was originally created in New Zealand, and wasn't introduced to western fisherman until around the mid 70's. However that is 50+ years of testing. With it still being effective, I would call this a classic streamer that not only looks great, but catches fish to boot. Depending on what type of feather you tie this with, the look and profile of this fly can vary drastically. From a short rounded tail like I tied today, which mimics baitfish like a sculpin, to a long, tapered and pointed tail which could even mimic leeches or if fishing saltwater maybe eels. The beauty of this fly is, you can buy just one inexpensive feather patch and tie up enough to fill 2-3 boxes of flies. It uses the same feather for the collar as the tail. Or you could use two different feathers to give the fly a gradient. Make sure you check out my sponsor Risen Fly. They have amazing deals on hooks and beads, but also sell some of the best fly rods Ive ever used, and at a price that is very reasonable. With the cost of fly fishing going up every year, it's refreshing to find great quality gear at prices we can all afford. Best off they are offering all of you a discount just for being my subscriber. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them. Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler Materials _____________ Hook: Risen 200 (size 12) - https://www.risenfly.com/collections/hooks/products/streamer-200 Weight: 0.015" lead wire (or lead free) - https://amzn.to/4kYXo2N Thread: Veevus 6/0 (black) - https://amzn.to/3Gc8VfW Wire: Ultra Wire (small, gold) - https://amzn.to/44bLkVJ Body: Uni Floss in Red (or any other body wrap you want) - https://amzn.to/4kW49lK Tail and Collar: Hackle Patch (varrying types) - https://amzn.to/4ni0SPs Head Cement: Solarez Ultra Thin UV Resin - https://solarez.com/bone-dry-intro-kit.html Tools: ____________________ Vise: Renzetti Traveler - https://amzn.to/2t2FFmo Bobbin: Stonfo Bobtec - https://amzn.to/2YWOf39 Scissors: Risen Spring Assist - https://www.risenfly.com/collections/fly-tying-tools-and-accessories/products/spring-assist-scissors Whip Finisher: Dr. Slick Brass - https://amzn.to/2tGYwDW Fly Tying Bench: Oasis Walnut Compact Bench - https://www.oasisbenches.com/oasis-benches/compact-bench/ UV Light: Solarez High Output - https://solarez.com/uv-cure-flashlight-high-output.html ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ My Fly Boxes▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Magnetic Fly Box - https://amzn.to/3DBwPQl Silicone Fly Box - https://amzn.to/40haoIX ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Me on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mcflytier/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mcflyangler/ #fishing #flyfishing #flytying 00:00 Intro 00:35 Hook selection 00:47 Weight and thread 01:37 Tie in the wire 02:00 Body wrap 03:08 Feather tail 05:42 Beard and collar 07:09 Whip finish and head cement 07:32 Fly discussion 10:18 Past and future flies 11:02 Buy my fly box 11:34 My sponsor Risen Fly 11:53 Go catch some fish
