#nba The modern NBA feels like it lacks true long-term rivalries, with most matchups burning hot for a few seasons before dissolving due to trades, injuries, or shifting team identities. What once felt like genuine animosity often fades as rosters change and competitive windows close. The Luka Dončić and Devin Booker feud in 2022 is a prime example of how intense and entertaining these rivalries can be, fueled by playoff moments, trash talk, and decisive wins, only to cool off once team circumstances changed. Even when those players return to relevance, the rivalry rarely regains the same edge. One of the few rivalries with real staying power is between Victor Wembanyama and the Oklahoma City Thunder, rather than just Chet Holmgren individually. Their tension predates the NBA, going back to international competition, and Wembanyama’s on-court intensity against OKC suggests something personal. Holmgren appears more indifferent, while Wembanyama treats matchups against the Thunder as statement games. Long term, the more compelling rivalry may involve Wembanyama against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander if both teams continue on a collision course in the Western Conference. Some of the league’s most iconic rivalries are clearly winding down. The Steph Curry and LeBron James era defined nearly a decade of NBA basketball, but the matchup no longer carries the same gravity. Instead, LeBron’s most heated ongoing rivalry may strangely be with Dillon Brooks, a matchup driven by physical play, taunting, and repeated confrontations across playoffs, regular season games, and even international competition. It is an unlikely rivalry, but one that feels genuine and combustible. Other rivalries never fully materialized despite strong narratives. James Harden versus Giannis Antetokounmpo was fueled by MVP tension and public comments but never truly played out on the court. Nikola Jokic versus Joel Embiid felt like a fan-driven rivalry built on skill comparisons and awards rather than personal animosity, and it ended abruptly due to injuries rather than resolution. Kevin Durant, meanwhile, has existed largely without a true rival, as potential feuds dissolved once he changed teams or joined former adversaries, leaving his legacy debate focused more on validation than opposition. Some rivalries only gain meaning in hindsight. Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade became linked through Finals history and career comparisons, while Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan’s rivalry has grown stronger over time as fans debate accolades, championships, and impact. These comparisons often say more about the values of the person making them than the players themselves. Looking forward, the league’s parity may be preventing rivalries from fully forming. With no repeat champions in years, dominance rarely lasts long enough to create sustained tension. For a new defining rivalry to emerge, stars like Anthony Edwards may need deep playoff runs against consistent opponents. While balance has made the league unpredictable, it has also diluted the kind of long-running rivalries that once defined entire eras of NBA basketball.
