The Rape by the Vampire
"And you know what makes me able to drink my fill and leave someone breathing and not rip their head off? It's that I can revel in it. I can make it fun." The video focuses on the 'rape' of the mind, which subsequently leads to the rape of the body. The element of 'rape' in vampire stories is rarely discussed by authors or the fan-base, or even portrayed in explicit terms. Yet it remains an intrinsic part of the nature of 'vampire'. The Vampire Diaries premieres with this theme, and gives us subtle, and sometimes more direct hints about what is actually going on. The first season commences with Damon Salvatore, a 25 year old vampire, raping a 17 year old girl from the town of Mystic Falls. As the season goes on, we are introduced to Katherine Piece who did the same to Stefan Salvatore, a 17 year old boy. From the beginning the audience is made aware of the supernatural power of mind-control, which vampires use to strip their victims of their mental faculties and reduce them to nothing but a body for sexual, and gustatory delight. The audience is told that the predators, after making their nature known to their victims, compel them to: forget, to stop being afraid, and more importantly to keep everything hush-hush. As soon as the predators lock eye with their victims, they strip them of their mental faculties, and the latter, unable to consent to future actions, are raped by the monsters that drained them dry. The audience is left to conclude (and at times told), that everything that takes place after compulsion is forced, and in this case, tantamount to rape. In fact, the rape is never really shown. There is no scene whereby the vampire pins the victim to the bed and brutally rapes her/him. But rape is heavily implied on more than one occasion. The evidence against Damon is prominent in season 1. Incidentally, both the abuser and the victim are the most promiscuous from the entire show, with the abuser being a 25 year old male with a heightened sexuality, and the victim being a 17 year old hormonal girl who jumps into bed with men she randomly meets. We see Damon in Caroline's room reading a book in her bed as she puts on her dress, and in episode 4 of season 1, as well as in the recap sequence of episode 5, we are shown bite marks all over Caroline's back, marks which are not on her during her first encounter with Damon (1x02, 1x03). This lead us to conclude that the marks were the result of another sexual relation between the two. The evidence against Katherine is more discreet. Firstly, the circumstances as shown in this video are identical to Damon' and Caroline's, leading us to believe that the same thing had taken place. Further on, we are made known that Katherine had been feeding Stefan her blood regularly, something which he had no recollection of. It is important to point out that not even the audience were shown such incident, which leads me to the main point of my argument: the two have had more sexual relations than we are shown. The rape occurs during those scenes and not during the ones highlighted in the video per se. It is obviously clear that the show handled this topic in a terrible manner, in the sense that it never explicitly made reference to it and even went as far as saying that no rape took place. However this reasoning is flawed and goes beyond any rational and logical thought. It is a huge insult to the intelligence of the audience, and reflects very poorly on the writers.
