The Real Ghostbusters (Arcade) Playthrough
Playthrough of The Real Ghostbusters, the 1987 action game developed and published by Data East for arcades. Based on the popular animated series, the game allows up to three players to take on the roles of Peter, Ray, Egon, or Winston (though they are distinguished primarily by the color of their jumpsuits). The mission is to clear ten levels of supernatural infestations, ranging from city streets and haunted houses to otherworldly dimensions. The narrative follows the team as they battle to contain a massive spectral surge, culminating in a final showdown against a powerful entity within a dark, nightmarish realm. The gameplay is an isometric run-and-gun experience where players use their proton packs to blast through waves of ghosts and ghouls. A unique mechanic involves the transition from "blasting" to "trapping": players use their beams to weaken smaller ghosts until they turn into harmless blobs, which can then be collected for points. For larger spirits and bosses, players must deploy a ghost trap to clear the area. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels can enhance the proton beam's width and range, or grant temporary invincibility. Visually, the game captures the "spooky-but-fun" aesthetic of the cartoon, featuring a variety of creative enemy designs—from floating eyeballs to possessed furniture. Each level ends with a massive boss fight that requires players to coordinate their fire. The sound design includes a digitized rendition of the iconic Ghostbusters theme song, adding to the authentic arcade atmosphere. This title stands as a classic of the cooperative arcade era, successfully bringing the Saturday morning cartoon magic to the coin-op world.
