the Scud

Believe it or not, the scud is an aquatic crustacean. Often found on the bottom of a rock you may have pulled from the bottom of a river or lake. They look much like potato bugs (yes, I was raised in Idaho) or pill bugs you likely find around your yard. This video is a basic scud pattern that I have used (and been very successful with) over the years. The pattern can be varied in thousands of different ways based on the hook used, dubbing, thread, and scudback material. I've tied this one weighted with lead to help it get to the bottom faster, but also in a size 14 hook (just for video purposes). Most commonly, I will be tying this in smaller sizes such as 18, 20, and 22s. It's hard for me to get a 24 or smaller on my tippet. Seldom do I tie or fish with a scud larger than an 18.
