The Smart Lighting Slider
The Smart Lighting slider in DxO PhotoLab can do some surprisingly impressive things with a single adjustment. Designed to intelligently balance exposure across an image, Smart Lighting analyzes shadows, midtones, and highlights to recover detail and create a more evenly exposed photograph. That said, many photographers eventually prefer making these adjustments manually for greater precision and creative control. By individually adjusting exposure, contrast, selective tone sliders, and curves, you can often achieve a more natural and personalized result than relying on automatic corrections alone. However, Smart Lighting still has an important place in an efficient editing workflow. For quick comparison edits, fast previews, or images that only need subtle improvements, the Smart Lighting function can work wonders. A modest adjustment is often enough to open shadows, tame bright highlights, and add overall balance without spending several minutes fine-tuning every tonal range manually. The key is moderation. If your image does not require drastic exposure recovery or heavy dynamic range correction, Smart Lighting can produce excellent results with very little effort. It is especially useful for event photography, travel images, casual shooting sessions, or any workflow where speed matters as much as quality. For more difficult images with extreme contrast or complex lighting conditions, manual adjustments will usually provide cleaner and more controlled results. But for many photographs, Smart Lighting offers an excellent starting point — and sometimes, it may be all the adjustment your image needs.
