The Somme: Breaking The Deadlock (WW1 Documentary)
By late July 1916, the Battle of the Somme had been raging for three weeks. The initial attack on the 1st of July, launched by British and French troops across a 36-kilometre front, had started with catastrophic results for the British. But the fighting had continued with a series of bloody engagements. Despite mounting losses, the battle simply had to go on, and so new troops were brought in to continue that advance. Enter the ANZACs: Australian and New Zealander troops who would go on to earn a fearsome reputation over the next two years. Their destination? The heart of the British sector of the battlefield, and one of the key German strongholds - a small village called Pozieres.
