A battlefield anthem for Pope Julius II:
Pope Julius II, elected in 1503, was one of the most forceful and politically active popes of the Renaissance.
He rebuilt the temporal power of the Papal States, leading military campaigns to reclaim territories lost to rival Italian powers.
Known as the “Warrior Pope,” he personally oversaw sieges, alliances, and the formation of the League of Cambrai and later the Holy League.
At the same time, he reshaped Rome culturally, commissioning Michelangelo, Raphael, and the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica.
History remembers him as a ruler who fused spiritual authority with military ambition, transforming both the Church and Italy.
