This week’s hive check came with a winter twist I didn’t expect. After the snowfall here in Eastern NC, I pulled out the infrared thermal scanner to see how the colonies were holding up — and what I found turned into quite the surprise.
In this video, you’ll see:
• Bees in the snow and what those yellow stains really mean (hint: cleansing flights, not dysentery).
• Swarm trap prep as I get everything ready for the upcoming season.
• Inspections on three hives to see how they handled the recent deep freeze and whether they needed fondant or candy boards refreshed.
• Quilt boxes doing their job, pulling moisture away from the cluster.
• A funny blooper that happened while filming one of the hives — I had to leave it in.
• Bees finding pollen even with nine inches of snow on the ground.
• A viewer question answered about why I use inner covers on some hives and not others.
• Hive 17’s mystery revealed — the thermal scanner showed almost no activity, but what I discovered inside was amazing.
