The Woolly Bugger is a pattern that has so many variations that I can’t even figure out where to start. I googled the history and/or origin of the fly and found that it could go back to a few variations of early British flies. However, it was in the 1970’s and 1980’s that the name was coined and much recognition was given to Russell Blessing and the name his daughter came up with stuck. In the 1984 article written about it, it was named one of America’s Most popular patterns. I don’t think much has changed besides the availability of new materials. I fish them. They simply catch fish. I tie lots of variations of this bug, but this seems to be one of my go to simple versions that I make sure I have plenty of in my box come spring. . . . .
