Thermocouple - Basic Concepts

Thermocouple is one of the widely used temperature sensors. It is based on the principle of 'Seebeck effect'. It consists of two dissimilar metals coupled together at two ends to form two junctions - hot junction and cold junction.The operating principle is that whenever both junctions are at different temperatures a potential differnce is produced across them which is proportional to the differential temperature. Thermocouples are active transducers as they are self-generating type i.e., they generate their own electric potential and don't require external energizing source.
