Things We Know (1 John 3:2, 5, 14, 16; 5:13; 2:5b-6; 3:24; 4:13; 5:14–15) Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2) You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. (1 John 3:5) We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. (1 John 3:14) By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. (1 John 3:16) I (write) say these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13) By this we may know that we are in him: (1 John 2:5b) whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. (1 John 2:6) Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. (1 John 3:24) By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. (1 John 4:13) And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
