This Burl Shouldn’t Exist – So much can go wrong!

This horse chestnut burl looked more like a giant bug than a piece of wood. Covered in knots, bumps and wild natural texture, it had a real monster feel before it even went on the lathe. In this woodturning project I mount this chestnut burl blank on the lathe and turn it into a unique natural edge bowl. The burl grain, bark inclusions and irregular surface made this turning both challenging and exciting. Every pass of the gouge revealed more swirling grain, voids and organic detail hiding inside. Horse chestnut burl can be unpredictable, but that’s what makes woodturning so rewarding. From rough chainsaw prep to final sanding and finish, this piece slowly transforms from an ugly bug ball into a one-of-a-kind turned bowl.
