The name of the model on "The Kiss" is Emilie Flöge, a fashion designer who ran a salon with her sister. Interestingly, there are no records of Klimt's romantic involvement with Flöge, yet their friendship is well documented. Emilie Flöge and Gustav Klimt were close friends, spending time together on different occasions. They would take walks in the park and enjoy the scenery. Flöge was often Klimt's muse, as he used her body as a model for most of his paintings, including "The Kiss." "The Kiss" was a commission for a sum of 25,000 crowns by Gustav Ritter von Epstein. Epstein wanted the painting to be more than two meters, but Klimt made it smaller, which cost him the commission. The painting was later bought by the Austrian Gallery in 1908. "The Kiss" is more than just a painting, it's a story. Gustav Klimt's romantic relationship with Emilie Flöge, his use of Flöge's body as a model, and the backstory behind the commission offer a glimpse into the artist's world and the creation of this mesmerizing masterpiece.
