Open this file and go through the steps to set up a new installation of the Essential mod for your desired version and Minecraft launcher. Make sure that your friend has also installed and set up the Essential mod. Then, Launch into Minecraft using this new installation, and under the 'Social' tab, add your friend by looking up their username. Now, once you join a singleplayer world, all you have to do is click 'Invite' in the pause menu, add your friend, and voila! You don't have to deal with Minecraft LAN, you don't have to be on the same connection as your friend, and there is no hassle! These steps work for all versions of Minecraft, as long as you and your friend are using the same version!
