three lanes
Three-lane single carriageways confuse plenty of drivers. That centre lane is shared for overtaking from both directions — nobody “owns” it. In this video I show you how to read the markings, time a safe overtake, and when to bin the move and live to try again. What you’ll learn: • When the middle lane is allowed and when markings or signs take it off the table • A simple MSPSL routine to plan, commit, and get back in early • Abort criteria: if you’re not 100% sure, you’re 100% not going • How to react when oncoming traffic also moves into the centre lane • Spotting right-turners using the middle lane and avoiding conflict • How to “hold” your line and speed when you’re the one being overtaken Highway Code essentials: • Rule 135: On a three-lane single carriageway, use the centre lane only for overtaking or turning right. You have no priority over oncoming traffic. Do not use the far-right lane — that’s for oncoming vehicles. • Rules 162–169: Overtake only when it’s safe and legal. Don’t blindly follow another overtaker. Give yourself space to return and keep a steady course if someone overtakes you. • Rule 163: Give safe passing space — about 1.5 m for cyclists up to 30 mph (more if faster), 2 m and under 10 mph for horses, and 2 m for pedestrians in the road. If you can’t give it, wait. • Rule 167: Don’t overtake where you could clash with others — near junctions, on brows and bends, where the road narrows, or near crossings. • Rule 129: Don’t cross or straddle a solid white line on your side, except for very limited cases like passing a pedal cycle or horse doing 10 mph or less when it’s safe. Pro tips you’ll see: • Build the move early: mirrors, signal, observation, decisive acceleration, pass, return • Read the whole scene — brows and bends hide oncoming traffic • Treat the centre lane like a live head-on risk zone, because it is Hashtags: #HighwayCode #ThreeLaneRoad #MiddleLane #Overtaking #UKDriving #LearnerDriverUK #DrivingTest #ARoadSafety #MSPSL #HazardPerception #StayLeft #DrivingLessons #StokeDrivingSchool #Cobridge #NewcastleUnderLyme #Crewe #ADI #PDI #DVSA #RoadSafety #KnowYourMarkings #Observation #PlanPreparePerform #DontBeThatGuy
