Thyroid storm is a life threatening emergency that is difficult to diagnose mainly because it is overshadowed by underlying factors.
However once, clinical diagnosis is confirmed by low TSH and high T3 and T4, the treatment is very simple and often requires resuscitation and '4 main blocking pathways'
1. Block release of thyroid hormone
2. Block production of thyroid hormone
3. Block peripheral conversion of T4 to more active T3
4. Block adrenergic crises using propranolol
Using simplified commentary and flow diagrams and summary at the end we attempt to keep it simple with easy to remember points. Please make sure to attempt 'thyroid storm' quiz at the end.
