In this 5 minute tutorial, I preview and explain the Tiered Vocabulary Protocol for preparing students to read a complex text, as learned during LETRS Vol 2 in Spring 2020. In this model, the teacher prepares a list of vocabulary to prioritize instruction of uncommon, multiple-meaning, and key content area vocabulary. In summary, the tiers are: Tier 1: Common words, which we do not pre-teach Tier 2: Uncommon, multiple-meaning, and content-area vocabulary that is critical for understanding the lesson or text, which we identify and pre-teach before reading (and rereading). Tier 3: Specific non-critical content area vocabulary that students do not need to understand to integrate your lesson or activity, which we teach in situ. Please let me know if you have any questions about how to implement or use this protocol!
