Host: Joanna Coles, Warren County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources Guest: Jason Phillips, Simpson County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources Topic: Tomato Fertilizaion The farm and home show features a discussion with Simpson County Extension Agent Jason Phillips about proper tomato care. He explains that tomatoes are heavy feeders and should be fertilized based on soil test recommendations, without overusing nitrogen early in growth. A starter fertilizer at planting can help tomatoes establish more quickly but is not required. Proper plant spacing and airflow are important, especially for indeterminate varieties that grow throughout the season. Indeterminate tomatoes should be pruned to one or two stems to direct energy toward producing larger fruit. Pruning must be done regularly to remove suckers and lower branches without removing fruit. Staking is recommended, particularly for larger or indeterminate tomato plants, to support growth. Determinate tomatoes produce most of their fruit at once, making staggered planting beneficial if used. Once tomatoes reach golf-ball size, additional nitrogen should be applied every two weeks to support fruit production. The key to fertilization success is applying the correct amount of nitrogen at the right time rather than early excessive feeding that promotes vine growth.
