Topaz is one of 11 War Relocation Camps where American citizens were wrongfully interred during WWII simply because of their ancestry. Internees were stripped of their possessions, homes, and livelihoods. Many would not survive their unjust incarcerations, as was the case with James Hatsuaki Wakasa, a 63-year-old chef from San Francisco. Wakasa was shot and killed while walking his dog near a perimeter fence. Hard of hearing, he had not heard the sentry's warning.
