There are numerous cases in which a straight prismatic bar is subjected to external forces that produce a moment, frequently called a torque in a torsion situation, about the axis of bar. This moment generally results in shear stresses in the interior of the bar. The corresponding deformations appear primarily as a twisting of the bar above its axis. In this video we discuss Saint Venant's approach for solution of torsional problems of bars with elliptical cross-section.
