TRAIN FOR GLORY
Train for Glory “Story”— Once in a great while the tumblers of the universe fall into place, and for one brief moment, something profound happens, and usually when you least expect it. I know it’s not uncommon to hear about local legends, stories of phantom ghost trains suddenly appearing in the dark and then disappearing. But just such a thing happened to me, but unlike the legends… mine was real. On July 18th, 1975, just after midnight, on my way home from a high school dance; on a dark country road, I came to railroad crossing in the middle of nowhere. I stopped. Suddenly in the distance I saw a massive cloud moving towards me. The ground literally shook and yes…I was afraid. Then I saw it. A light, like a giant eye in the center of the cloud… coming right at me. Suddenly a huge, black steam locomotive roared out of the darkness, clouds of steam and smoke billowing out from its sides; thick black clouds of smoke and ash filling the night sky. It was lit up like a Christmas tree, lights around each window and several cars with large windows in their sides. I sat in awe as I watched “America’s Freedom Train” thunder by on its way from Peoria IL to its next stop. I was the only one there to see it…just me, as if the universe had chosen only me to see it. You don’t forget something like that, and I believe that single moment may have been the first seed in my brain of what would eventually become “Train for Glory”. For centuries trains have inspired us in music. “Orange Blossom Special”. Guy William’s “Desperados Waiting for a Train.” Arlo Guthrie’s “City of New Orleans.” Gladys Night’s “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Tom Wait’s “Train Song.” And even SOUL TRAIN. The list is endless; and in all of them, those ancient, steam driven wonders have become the embodiment of RESILIENCE, and HOPE, and INSPIRATION, and even LOVE. When I began creating the video “Train for Glory” I found some amazing video clips of old steam trains by cinematographer Kelly Lacy, and then a few more by several other artists, but when the video was finished… something was missing. I had all this amazing footage of trains, but something was missing. Then it occurred to me. “Train for Glory” isn't really about trains. It's only the vehicle for something far greater-- LOVE. All kinds of LOVE. As I added the changes "Train for Glory" suddenly came to life. Even now I struggle to pigeon whole it in a particular genre. It could literally be a Gospel Song, or a Modern Country Song, an Adult Contemporary Song and maybe even a Modern Folk song. But at the end of the day what it is, whatever anyone wants to call it, it is a LOVE Song. If you like it PLEASE SHARE IT. And SUBSCRIBE to my channel.
