Transforming data: Compute and Recode in SPSS

We need to transform data into different forms as per statistical/research needs. There are two widely used transformation procedures in SPSS called compute and recode. We use compute command to create a new variable from existing variables by using various formulas, e.g., sum, mean, subtraction, etc. We use the recode function in SPSS for several reasons. Such as To transforming or recoding numeric/scale variables into converted numeric or categorical variables. For example, change the scale variable 'total score of Internet addiction' into the categorical variable 'Internet user category: minimal, moderate and excessive'. To combine or merge various variables To reverse score for negatively coded scale items To replace missing values To treat outliers in SPSS We can recode into the same variable or recode into different variables. Each method has its merits and demerits.
