Story explained: Knives & Vash are twins born from a plant, a power-producing vaguely humanoid organic battery created and used by humans. While looking outwardly human they have many superhuman characteristics like rapid growth, healing and intelligence. They are born on a space ship where hundreds of thousands of humans are sleeping in cryo pods, waiting to land on a new planet and build a new human colony. The only person awake at the time of their birth is Rem, who finds them and decides to raise them secretly. Knives in particular wish to meet with other people, longing for connection, claiming the humans will surely be able to look past their differences because, despite reading about history and treatment of those that are different, he believes at heart, they are the same. Until Vash and him stumbles upon the dissected corpse of another plant child like them, finding out they were not first and Rem had kept them hidden for a reason. While Vash lashes out but eventually talks it through with support from Rem and Knives, Knives pretends everything is fine with him as he is mentally falling apart. He secretly orchestrates the ship they're on to crash into a planet, which would blow up everyone still sleeping but the three of them that were awake would make it out. Rem however decides last minute to send off the twins on their own, going back to certain death to attempt to course correct and stop the ships from crashing. This breaks Knives even further as he sees their mother choosing humanity - the people that want them harm - over them. Trigun Maximum (not yet Millions) Knives. The Crash.
