mbrella was written as a metaphor about difficult relationships, the type that you want to find out what is going on, but you stop communicating - even though you have that "leftover umbrella" that you shared, the tension in the relationship is palatable...and confusing.
You go on thinking about them again and again - all those special people in your life.
Eventually you learn to be happy with your own life, dancing in the rain.
The lyrics were written on an inspired moment (I actually wrote two songs, the other is a minor chord/sad piano based song)...this one is sad, yet the chords are from a lick I taught myself for the last 10 years - kind of a warm up whenever I play, and now it's the basis for this upbeat song.
