This is Sean with Alexander Mathematics and Physics Tutoring and today's lesson is on the derivative, a subject that I've noticed causes a lot of calculus students a lot of grief because they don’t really understand what the derivative is. As they move through the calculus class this can cause a lot of conceptual misunderstandings.
It’s really important that calculus students understand that the derivative is the slope of the tangent line. I’m going to show you how to derive the derivative from first principles the way Isaac Newton originally did. This should give the student a solid conceptual understanding of the derivative and its meaning which will make the rest of the calculus class run much smoother for them.
