You know that pain on the inside of your shoulder blade that just won't quit? Someone tells you that your rhomboids are probably just too tight. Well, it likely is not the rhomboid muscles. Sitting just deep to the rhomboid muscles is a muscle called serratus posterior superior. Whereas the rhomboids attach to the scapula, serratus posterior superior attaches to the upper ribcage. Tightening of the upper ribcage tends to move the scapula into abduction and lengthen the rhomboids. This means the rhomboid muscles are actually too loose (or inhibited), and the tension felt on the inside of the scapula is actually a tightened (or facilitated) serratus posterior superior. This video shows SMRT releases for both muscles, which will move the upper back muscular back toward balance and alleviate pain. This is a clip from Full Circle's Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique: Shoulder, Axilla, Ribcage, & Upper Back continuing education for bodyworkers video.
