It’s meant to level out channels that are naturally louder or quieter so you don’t constantly ride the volume knob. When to use it One channel is always too loud (dispatch blows your ears out): set a negative offset (ex: -1 or -2). One channel is always too quiet (a ham repeater is hard to hear): set a positive offset (ex: +1 or +2). Works for both analog and digital channels because it’s an audio-level trim, not a reception setting. Quick method on the scanner (fastest) Hold on the channel you want to adjust: press CHANNEL once (you should see Hold). Press FUNC, then press 0 (LVL) to open Channel Volume Offset. Use the on-screen prompt to change the value (you’ll see it cycle through a small range like -3 … 0 … +3). Stop when you’re at the value you want. Press CHANNEL again to resume scanning. Menu method (more “official”) Use this if you prefer doing it through channel settings: Press MENU. Go to Manage Favorites → choose your Favorites List → choose your System → choose your Department (or talkgroup list). Select the Channel/Talkgroup you want to change and open Channel Options. Scroll to Volume Offset and set it to the value you want. Back out of the menu to resume scanning. Recommended starting values Start with +1 if the channel is too quiet. Start with -1 if the channel is too loud. Only go to ±3 if it’s still way off.
