Thankfully, with Unity's new Input System, this has never been easier. The Input System was designed with different controllers in mind, so you can easily set up key bindings for multiple different actions - whether that's based on keyboard, joystick, mouse, or even regular gamepad controllers. Through this system, you can also quickly detect key events like players joining from a different controller, lost connections, and even when different controller bindings should be used between regular play and the UI.
