Universal Cartridge - Modification
Order directly from the manufacturer: htttp://www.ProtoART.net In this video we will show you how to install the universal cartridge for the Formlabs Form 2 and Form 3 3D printers. The modification that we will do in this video is one of the two methods to install a universal cartridge module. To order and for more information, go to: http://www.protoart.net The advantage of the shown method is that no holes need to be drilled into the compartment that holds the resin. This method reduces the risk of leakage and enables you to print with the more aggressive and biocompatible resins. For the installation you need the following tools: Universal cartridge module An adapter to mount the module. The STL file can be downloaded from the installation link found in the manual. A 3mm drill Super glue Soldering iron with solder Isopropyl alcohol Tape. As a first step you need a clean and empty cartridge. You can clean it by filling it completely with Isopropyl alcohol, shake it, let it sit 30 minutes, shake again and the cartridge should be clean. I have already done this so we will proceed with the installation. I’m removing the stickers then separate the top and bottom of the cartridge. Now we can clean the outside with isopropyl alcohol. The next step is removing the original chip from the cartridge bottom. The easiest way to do this is by heating it a few seconds with a soldering iron and then use a knife to remove it. A hole needs to be drilled to run the wire of the universal cartridge through. Now install the module in the adapter and add some glue to keep it in place. Make sure the orientation of the USB connector is right. To fix the adapter with module to the cartridge, you can use strong double sided tape or super glue. The wire needs to run down the cartridge. To protect it and keep it in place I’m fixing it black duct tape. But you can use any type of thin tape. The wire has a special chemical resist coating. It is easiest to remove this coating with the flat tip of your soldering iron. Run the wire through the drilled hole of the bottom part of the cartridge then solder it to the flexible contacts. The S.I.G. marking connects with the red wire and the G.N.D. marking with the black wire. Put a bit of glue on the pocket of the original chip and glue the new contacts in place. You can now assemble back the top and bottom halves and your universal cartridge is finished. To configure the cartridge, open the configurator and connect the cartridge to your PC. You now select the resin type you want to use and press configure. That’s it, you are ready to go.
