As a disabled person, a lot of my life has been “you can’t/won’t be able to do that” or “no, you need to do it this way, your way is wrong”. I also experience this thing often associated with autism called “Pathological Demand Avoidance” (I prefer “Persistent Demand for Autonomy”) that makes me really good at ignoring that and continuing to do what I do, such as be an activist and make world history directing a show. But… sometimes it also gets me in trouble. In today’s video we’re going to learn about what PDA is, where the term came from, what it can look like, and how we can accommodate for it in ourselves and in others. And maybe we’ll learn a bit about human nature along the way! (Note - this conversation has changed a bit since I made this video, so some of this may be outdated! It is on my short list of things to remake) If you want to support me financially - https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sydneyzarlengo Or get exclusive perks & content on Patreon! - patreon.com/SydneyZarlengo Find me on Insta and TikTok - @disabled.autistic.lesbian Request a video idea - https://forms.gle/TW5HAeZLmGLWNYwK7 Request a media review - https://forms.gle/rji1Hnw34ypSzA6cA Check out my undergrad work - https://www.disabledautisticlesbian.com/curious-incident If you want to hire me as a disability consultant or to give a workshop on accessibility, feel free to email me at [email protected] Sources & further resources - @atpeaceparents @livedexperienceeducator @autistic_callum_ @drdevonprice pathological demand avoidance in autism, explained - https://www.spectrumnews.org/news/pathological-demand-avoidance-in-autism-explained/ original 2003 PDA study - https://adc.bmj.com/content/88/7/595 2018 study - https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(18)30044-0/fulltext
