Lesson Summary In this lesson, the roots of Christian meditation in the Hebrew Scriptures are explored through the covenantal attentiveness and the posture of the heart awakened to God's presence. Meditation as Israel’s Way of Life: It was an ordinary expectation for every covenant member. It involved remembering, rehearsing, and internalizing God's voice. This included the Shema, binding God’s words to everyday life. The Hebrew Words That Reveal the Heart of Meditation: Hāgâ: To murmur, ponder, chew, hum. Sîaḥ: To converse with the soul, muse, reflect. Both involve dialogue and affection-driven pondering. Meditation as Internalizing the Covenant: It shapes obedience, courage, and desire. Transforming God's word from page to heart. The Psalms: Israel’s School of Desire and Meditation: They provide the vocabulary of the meditative heart. Illustrate meditation as gazing, clinging, remembering, and love for the Word. Second Temple Jewish Context: Shows how meditation was ingrained in Jewish life. Morning and evening prayer, scripture reading, and repeated prayer were common practices. The lesson also delves into how Jesus becomes the focal point of meditation, both as the true Temple and the fulfillment of Israel's meditative posture. It further discusses Paul’s perspective on meditation as life guided by the Spirit and early Christian voices affirming the Hebrew roots of meditation. What This Means for Us Today: Christian meditation must remain anchored in scripture, covenant relationship, presence, formation, desire, and remembrance. It emphasizes engagement with God's presence, not escape or self-realization. Guided Meditative Practice: “Gazing Upon the Lord” (Psalm 27): It involves becoming still, turning the inner gaze toward Jesus, meditating on His beauty, receiving His dwelling, and resting in stillness. Concludes by emphasizing being held in divine love.
