Upper Trap Length Test/Stretch
Upper Trapezius Length Test/Stretch Purpose: To assess/increase muscle length of the upper trapezius. Origin: Occipital Protuberance, Ligamentum Nuchae. Insertion: Lateral 1/3rd of the clavicle. Action: Elevation and upward rotation of the scapula. Step 1: 0:57 With patient lying supine, lift the head of the table to create cervical flexion. Step 2: 1:09 Use the hand opposite the side you are stretching to cradle the patient’s head and bring them into CONTRALATERAL SIDEBEND and IPSILATERAL CERVICAL ROTATION through partial ROM of each component. IE. When stretching the right UT, sidebend left and rotate right. NOTE: This stretch will not require excessive lateral flexion or rotation if you maintain proper cervical flexion. Step 3: 1:45 Use your ipsilateral hand to apply an inferior force through the lateral spine/acromion of the scapula to create scapular depression and downward rotation. Ask your patient to identify the location and intensity of the stretch to ensure that your technique is effective. When assessing muscle length, compare to the opposite side by noting differences in the fully lengthened position. When stretching the upper trapezius to increase muscle length, hold the stretch for a cumulative 90-150 seconds. Evidence: Leal & Dennison, 2011. ISC 21.1.3 pp.19
