UCONN MSE Mechanical testing lab The extensometer will accurately measure strain by clamping onto the reduced area portion of a sample and mitigate the effects of grips on position measurement. Extensometers are typically defined by their gage length and travel distance and used until the yield point of the sample. They can be used to clamp flat or cylindrical specimens by swapping out clamping brackets. Test methods may be setup to allow removal of the device after the yield point, or by simply pausing the test in progress.
